So You're Gonna Remodel...

If you have never remodeled before you may not anticipate the challenges you may face in remodeling. The excitement and dream of a new space can shroud the truth that remodeling is like surgery and will take some pain and time to get through.  If you aren’t prepared for the challenges that will arise, what would normally be a frustrating situation will turn into something that can reduce you to a shapeless mass of sad emotions and stress.

But that is why Blue Rose Design exists. To help guide you through the mess and prepare you for the challenges that may arise.

Here are some things to prepare yourself for:

1)      Unexpected problems.  Especially if you live in an older home you must be prepared for the possibility that there may be some hidden issue that you may not discover until your home is torn apart. Maybe you had a leak you didn’t know about that has caused damage or maybe the people who owner your home before you decided to do it themselves and did it wrong. If you understand that this is a possibility you will be more prepared to deal with it should it arise.

 2)      Delays.  Delays typically come from two sources, materials or scheduling.

  •  Material Delays:  In this imperfect world there can be delays due to mis-shipments, damaged shipments, weather delayed shipments or just back orders on materials that have been over sold.  Having the materials purchased and on site prior to the job beginning can help mitigate some of these delays.
  •  Scheduling Delays: Contractors are often managing multiple jobs at once and it is difficult to predict exactly how long a certain job will take. Maybe the job before yours ran into water damage that they didn’t expect and now they have 3 more days of work than they anticipated, or maybe they were going to install cabinets at another job but the cabinets were delayed by a few days so now they have to fill their schedule. With so many variables it is important to stay flexible and be patient.

Other things you can do to make it easier on yourself:

1)      Know your budget : Budgeting can be difficult especially if you do run into unexpected problems, but it will ease your stress if you don’t push your limits of what you are comfortable spending. (you can read more on the article on budgeting.)

2)      Remember that there is not just one right answer: Customers often ask what tile should I use on my backsplash? Or what countertop should I use? As if there is only one that could possibly be the correct choice. There are many choices that can look great. If you find that a product you love is too expensive or if it is not available when you need it remember that there is probably another option out there that will work.

To sum all this up, to avoid stress and early hair loss stay flexible and be patient and everything will come together.
